F1 testing: Strong first day for Verstappen in the Red Bull
Day one of pre-season testing in Bahrain has been completed, with Max Verstappen setting the pace for Red Bull.
The Dutchman was quickest of all on the opening day, with a time of 1:32.834, set on the softest C5 tyres.
Verstappen completed 157 laps of the Sakhir circuit, more than any other driver, and looked in good shape throughout the day.
Behind Verstappen, Fernando Alonso was second fastest for Aston Martin, just 0.029secs behind the Red Bull driver.
Nico Hulkenberg was third fastest for Haas, ahead of Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes.
The Mercedes team had a difficult day, with Hamilton completing just 83 laps due to a hydraulics issue.
Testing continues in Bahrain on Thursday and Friday, before the season-opening race in the same country on March 5.
