Seismic Swarm in Naples: Multiple Tremors Recorded
Five Seismic Events Registered in Campi Flegrei Area
Epicenter Located Near Solfatara Volcano
On August 18, 2023, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) recorded a series of seismic events in the Naples area, particularly in the Campi Flegrei region. At least five bradysismic events of significant intensity occurred after 6:00 AM, prompting concern among residents.
The strongest tremor, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, struck at 6:18 AM, with its epicenter located near the Solfatara volcano. This was followed by four other lesser tremors, all originating within the Campi Flegrei caldera.
The seismic swarm has raised concerns about potential volcanic activity in the area. Campi Flegrei is a known volcanic hotspot, and while the current tremors are not yet considered a direct threat, they serve as a reminder of the region's geological instability.
Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and to follow instructions from local officials in the event of further seismic activity. Geologists are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
